Get Away From This Awful Box

I've got quite a bit planned for today so this is gonna be short. I've managed to post nearly every day this month and i believe a great little pattern is forming. Looking forward to tonight's party to celebrate this dog shaped thing above.
Really any excuse will do...

Looking forward to seeing the Simpsons on the big screen. Zach Kim does a great cover of the theme song on two guitars at once. A little noodley but it does the trick.

Plane Down

Digging through all my old photos i came across a picture of my brother and a friend in a downed plane. Its strange how many lost things one might have on their computer. Like finding old attachments of bad jokes. I really never read that shit.
Man, there is no point to this blathering...
Sorry, on to the music, folks!

Pointless Video Clip Of The Day

What better way to spend time in prison than by performing a remake of the Michael Jackson video Thriller with 1500 of your fellow inmates? Sure beats dropping the soap!

Orb Double Double

During the early 90s when grunge was making me puke, ambient music was a great escape from the plaid shirts and Pearl Jam facial hair and the Orb were kings. My introduction to them was via Much Music and the video for Little Fluffy Clouds. Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld and UFOrb are still in regular rotation on my ipod and the albums' dub sensibilities hold up quite nicely.

The Reality of Celebs

I am a sucker for lame online celebrity smut. After sifting through all the junk on TMZ, i noticed an image gallery of photoshopped celebs in very ordinary situations, arranged with a little help from Planet Hiltron. Some really funny results...

Coming back from my late night drunk got me in the mood to search for odd drawings. News Today has a great link to Maxwell Loren Holyoke-Hirsch, a young illustrator and designer with spot on style.

Promotion Celebration

Yes i got a little promotion at work and naturally i'm hitting the bar tonight. This shouldn't seem like anything surprising, seeing as i've been holding this position for sometime now but i've never gotten a promotion for anything in my 36 years and its overdue.
and to start the evening right...

One Note Extravaganza

If you are following the White Stripes tour across Canada, you might be interested in this video. It seems that Jack and Meg lived up to their "playing all territories, all provinces" commitment by performing a free "one note" concert in St John's, Newfoundland on Monday afternoon. Very funny!

Real Funk For Real People

Released in 2001, this is quickly becoming the funk compilation i turn to on the old ipod. Keb Darge and hip hop giant Pete Rock compiled this collection as part of volume 3 in a series that has also been helmed by DJ Shadow and Kenny Dope. A real party starter for those with uneasy feet or a simple need to get off the couch.

Never Short Changed At Poketo!

Its been some time since i've posted anything illustration based, so when i saw these uniquely crafted wallets i couldn't resist.
"Poketo is a network of artists, founded by the two of us, Ted Vadakan and Angie Myung. Totally eclectic and 100% unique. We first launched our artist wallets in 2003 with a handful of emerging artists, produced in very limited editions, they acted as artist promo pieces to accompany the art show we produced."
Truly great clothing designs!

Super cool Vader helmet art. I thought about this idea a couple years ago and sure enough it happens. Someone comes along and does it. Fantastic. Please don't steal my idea of an all cereal based restaurant. Piss me off.

Vancouver Stylee

Thanks for the response about the last post. One person. Nice.
Tonight's song comes from one of this city's best kept secrets, Calamalka. The band has some serious dub influences and should not be missed live. I believe they'll have a new disc out soon but like most Vancouverites its a little hard to get motivated. We hibernate 70% of the time and bitch the last 30% away.

Beat Dimensions Double Double

Beat Dimensions is a great compilation of European instrumental hip hop from a group of producers that met online. Very modern sounding with some songs adopting Dilla's cut up style. The Rush Hour label website has this to say about the album, "Amsterdam seems to be almost the perfect place to base a compilation of this kind – maybe it’s the worldly attitude of many of the producers, DJ’s and heads that are based there? Maybe it’s the passion for hip hop beats and way out experimentation? Whatever it is, there is something serious going on in those machines and Cinnaman + Jay Scarlett are all over it!"
Some of it reminds me of early DJ Krush. Enjoy!

Week Of Rock : Day Seven

Giving some early closer to my "Week O Rawk", I can't think of a better ending than the Jesus And Mary Chain. Having seen them live in their prime changed me forever. I bought a guitar and formed my first band because of it. I traveled four hours to catch the gig in Montreal during their Automatic tour. Journeying a great distance for a concert at 18 seemed a little excessive but a friend easily convinced me this would be something i shouldn't miss. As we got to the show we happened upon the Reid brothers hitting up an arcade on the main drag. Completely surreal! I literally had my shoes blown off during the first song, only to wait until the place cleared out before i could retrieve them.
A great Bo Diddley cover...

Week Of Rock : Day Six

I rarely find a good live album but during the mid 90s, this was the best thing around. Spiritualized's Fucked Up Inside captured the droney arrangements of Lazer Guided Melodies so perfectly i couldn't wait to see them play. The track i'm featuring is the final song on the album. Buzz wizz hiss...

Week Of Rock : Day Five

Saturday night is all about Teenage Fanclub. This early 90s jem is from a great little EP full of their Big Star-esque sound and includes covers of T Rex and Madonna favourites. Probably the best songs they've recorded. Although my personal favourite is Gene Clark from Thirteen...
I love the dopey sample at the beginning of this track.

Week Of Rock : Day Four

A little less bitter today but equally upset. I'm not gonna get into it cause i feel good about my upcoming Friday night recording session. I really can't wait until i have some new songs to post up. We're working on a beats album a la Jel but with more droning. We can't get enough of it.

Today's offering comes from the Rolling Stones. They are a fairly new band with a healthy outlook on life. I hear the guitarist has a smashing relationship with his parents. Snort...

I think i wanna hit something. Fuck you Harper, you saggy dough-faced fuck. Hope you choke on a Timbit and die. Better yet, hope you choke on a mouth full of donkey jizz, you halfwitted motherfucking ass drifter! Eat me!

Week Of Rock : Day One

I've decided to spend the week posting nothing but rock songs. It may seem like a simple task but truth be told, i've been so engulfed in hip hop lately, this may test my patience. Finding the right tracks that is.
Song number one comes from the drums and guitar duo, The Black Keys. I lost track of these guys after listening to the first album repeatedly and it wasn't until i saw the opening scene of Black Snake Moan (
Nice tits Christina!) that i felt the need to share this with you.

Here Come The Dix

What a great weekend! I am too sun burnt to live. Bald guys really do need to wear hats in the sun. Ouch!
Tonight's offering comes from the stupid funny Prince Paul project, The Dix. Released a couple years ago by Smacks Records, i can only speculate that had Gnarls Barkley not come along, The Dix might be a household name. Then again maybe not.
