Johnny Five Alive

After a hearty meal of soft burritos and fizzy pop, this might get interesting!
"A car seat with a 5 point racing harness welded to a robotic arm. This is a crazy, but fun ride."

Do The Math

Like Joni Mitchell returning from a space voyage, Linda Perhac offers some folk with a pinch of otherworldliness. I didn't know what to think when i first heard this but it tends to stick in your head.

Absolutely mind blowing motion graphics and illustrations from Oleg Paschenco. I don't normally go in for this sort of horror vibe but the site makes the whole thing come together.

Ride Double Double

Short of posting the whole bloody thing, i've decided to share a couple songs from my favourite shoegazey EP of all time. Ride released Today Forever, a 4 song beauty at the height of their popularity. I hear a lot of bands trying to emulate this sound and not really getting it. Don't bother trying! Go back to ripping off Grunge. At least you can make a decent fool of yourself. Eddie Vedder doesn't mind.

The video for Today is boring and not really needed but it was a different time. Right before all the good booty shaking videos came along.

These Children Are Free

The oh so good people at Stones Throw Records are offering the second installment of their Chrome Children compilation for free. It is a slow download but worth every minute. Featuring tracks from Madlib, Oh No, Percee P, Gary Wilson and others. The video is from Chrome Children Vol. 1. J Dilla's Nothing Like This...

Dedicated To Megan Wilson

She's gonna hate me for this but what the hell!?! One of Madlib's Yesterdays New Quintet side projects, Malik Flavors is a crazy syncopated drum fest fit for a person not of their right mind. I pull this out from time to time to drown out the old folks yelling at me on the bus.

Ratatat Double Double

Sometimes albums will simply amaze me. Take Ratatat's 20 minute EP, 9 Beats. Very spare drumming with little guitar and structure, most songs lasting less than two minutes. And yes, its 9 songs are titled Beat 01, Beat 02, etc. Another addition to their love of hip hop remixes, this could be the backing tracks for one fucked up MC.
They will be playing a show at Richard's in Vancouver on March 28.
Visit their myspace page for more details.
The video is from an older track, Cherry.

Pimpin' The Hustle

Apostle of Hustle are coming out with a new album, National Anthem Of Nowhere, to hopefully go with a Canada wide tour. With members from the oh-so-many-big-headed Broken Social Scene, its not a live act to be missed. Latin flavour with that indie rock aesthetic.

The following (very dark) video is a live recording of their song, Kings and Queens.

Sunday Night Funk

I started creating little funk and soul mixes awhile back as a way of making birthday gifts. Yes i'm a cheap bastard but i thought this might make people happy. Remember, there is no better gift than the gift of music.

[insert overly violent vomiting noise here]

This is one of those mixes. The tracklisting is as follows...

Psychedelic Shack - The Temptations
I Wanna Know If It's Good To You (Instrumental) - Funkadelic
What's The Name Of This Funk (Spiderman) - Ramsey Lewis
Just Kissed My Baby - The Meters
Breakthrough - Isaac Hayes
Truck Stop - Johnny Pate
Bump and Hustle Music - Tommy Stewart
Give It Up Turn It Loose - The Daktaris
Chance With You - Brother To Brother
Call My Name - Joe Bataan
Is That Enough - Marvin Gaye
He's A Superstar - Roy Ayers
I Get Lifted - George McRae
Brutas Drums - Eddie Warner
Hey, Brother Man - Mickey And The Soul Generation
Spacing Out - The Invaders
Savage - Don Julian
Loving You - Johnny Guitar Watson

RJD2 Double Double

Aside from the obvious DJ Shadow comparisons, RJD2 continues to release an excellent cross section of pop and hip hop songs. I've managed to come across a number of tracks from his new album. Some great catchy singing and few instrumentals. I do like the instrumentals however.

Fuzzy Wuzzy

This comic strip has been a favourite of mine for a while now. Being the anti-Garfield, Get Fuzzy offers up a less cutsy look at the cat/dog dynamic. I can only hope that this strip isn't made into a Hollywood shlockfest with Eddie Murphy voicing the characters. I think creator Darby Conley has his head on straight. Man i miss Calvin and Hobbes!

Balloons Galore

Great use of time lapse photography!

"One hundred six balloons in a mass ascension at the Reno Balloon Race. Can you see where the cow jumped over the moon? This was shot with a Canon S3 using GBTimelapse and a Canon Pro1 running in continuous mode."

Its very surreal looking. Found at Newstoday.

Another Askey Enters The World

I just got word that my friends Daryl and Berni had a baby boy this morning. Cade Askey (hope i got the spelling right) was born at 6:30am, weighing in at 9 Lbs 5 Oz. Big fat baby! This is probably the closest i'll come to being an uncle. Oh well...

This is a Deerhoof double double dedication to the new family! Congrats!

You Just Linked Up To It

How high do you have to be to name your band after a dog? Fila Brazillia has been around for a good 15 years making all sorts of decent downtempo fodder for the laid back and disjointed. I happened upon their first album while visiting Vancouver for a summer vacation. Old Codes New Chaos was a great introduction but it wasn't until the next album that i was truly hooked.

I managed to catch their live show in Montreal a few years back and it really blew me away. Hopefully they'll get their shit together to tour another album.

Kelis Was Here!

I'm heading out to a party at my friend Gareth's (AKA Cancerboy) tonight and to get in the drinky drink mood i've started listening to some old Kelis tracks. This sucker is from her album, Kaleidoscope. You might have heard this track on Fila Brazillia's Another Late Night. Great booty and a voice like none other. The video i've included is for her song, Trick Me.

Paul Weller Double Double

My introduction to Paul Weller was during the height of acid jazz. I was invited to a record label meet and greet 13 years ago and happened upon a copy of his song, Sunflower, on a compilation i received while at the party. Never being a big Jam or Style Council fan, this new soul sound got to me.
The songs i've posted are instrumental tracks from two of his EPs, released around the album, Wild Wood.

Let It Snow No More

Not to be the weather man or obvious for that matter but what the fuck? Wet feet and slippery slidey buses! I can't wait to get up tomorrow to snowmen attacking the city or the ghost of Al Gore gnawing on the remains of my neighbours. No i'm not on crack. Al Gore scares the crap out of me.

It Ain't Shittsburgh...

Do you ever start listening to bands solely on their name? Butthole Surfers? Gnarls Barkley? Man or Astroman? I seem too do it quite often. How can you possibly pass up a group calling themselves Black Moth Super Rainbow?
The first time i visited their website, they posted a rejection letter from Warp Records stating that the company weren't interested in the band's sound and wouldn't sign them. Right off i knew i had found something special.
Hailing from Pittsburgh, BMSR create a blend of beats, detuned electronics and vocoder that brings to mind cracked out children's music. Very simple sounding but requires a truly open minded listener.
They recently posted a series of remixes on their site available to all.

Welcome To The Grindhouse

I'm looking forward to this little double feature that comes out a couple days before my birthday. Wink Wink. The trailer reminds me of Death Race 2000 or something. Very 70s.

I'm Lousy With Sickness

New Year's pasted without a hangover but it fucked up my sickly illin' head with sinus delights. My head feels like a combo of this sad sack cutesy dog picture, 30 pounds of mucus and a Gary Wilson song. A viscous nightmare! No kidding!

Happy New Year, really!!!
